The 35-year-old won Il Lombardia and five Grand Tour stages, as well as finishing on the podium of the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, during a 16-year career. He said: “The decision is the right one. I am very happy. I am very proud of the sporting career I have had. I’m very happy to close this chapter in the way we are closing it.
