Richard Avedon was deeply fascinated by the forces shaping American democracy, and he approached them with the same sharp, discerning eye that defined his fashion photography. Today, both the fashion world and the political sphere find themselves in difficult positions. It feels as though we’ve reached a dead end, as if the boundaries have been fully drawn. Moving forward is hard—yet somehow, we always do. While trying to work strictly within the vocabulary of Avedon’s style, I eventually reached a moment when I closed the book and discovered my own path. Everything evolves this way.
