Ever feel like you’re taking all the hits so others don’t have to? I was asked recently by a group of executive leaders how I’d learned the lessons I now teach. My answer? I’ve been a crash test dummy all my life. Nothing’s come easy. I’ve invited collisions I knew were coming so I could learn something valuable—and pass it on to others. In many ways, leadership is exactly the same. If you’re leading, you’re a crash test dummy too. You go first. You break barriers. You take the hits so others can follow safely. You suffer in ways that those who come after won’t—and that’s why leadership, to me, is servanthood. We serve others through what we endure, what we push beyond, and the paths we pioneer.
