Before film existed, Howard University students were staging plays that celebrated Black life. From early voice-training classes led by Coralie Franklin Cook to the Howard Players’ 1919 formation, the theater department became a catalyst for Black stories and a national movement. Productions ranged from “plays of Negro life” to European classics, and the program commissioned new works and toured internationally. Alumni like Ossie Davis and Chadwick Boseman emerged from a tradition that blends activism, scholarship and artistry.
