Howard’s film program continues its 54-year legacy of centering Black perspectives. At the 2025 University Film & Video Association conference, professor Montre Aza Missouri and students presented research tracing the L.A. Rebellion, Black film aesthetics and the influence of queer women on cinema. Students Zion Binet Murphy and Jala Bennett discussed making films that celebrate Black life without trauma tropes and proudly described their program as uniquely Howard — not “a chocolate-covered USC.” They call for trust and resources so future filmmakers can thrive.
