Welcome to New York, Marcus Semien! Yesterday, the Mets made a splash by shipping longtime outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Semien.
Semien, 35, is coming off a season where he hit .230 with 15 home runs and 62 RBI over the course of 127 games, but had his season cut off due to a fractured left foot.
David Stearns emphasized run prevention at his end-of-the-year press conference. With Nimmo, who isn’t known for his defensive tools, the Mets bolster their defense by adding a two-time Gold Glove winner in Semien. Francisco Lindor and Semien now form one of the league’s strongest up-the-middle duos, and the move also opens a spot in left field to pursue another outfielder.
Semien is entering year five of a seven-year, $175 million contract, where he’s set to earn $26 million in 2026.
When you look at this trade, the Mets shred two years of contract commitment: instead of being tied to five more seasons of Nimmo, they take on Semien’s remaining three years. ...
