Gramma, a member of the first batch of Galápagos tortoises to arrive at the San Diego Zoo, died last week. She made the transfer to San Diego roughly a century ago between 1928 and 1931. Gramma was thought to be in her 40's at her arrival. Her age at death was estimated to be 141, which would have made her the oldest living animal at the San Diego Zoo. An endangered species, the Galápagos tortoise is the largest in the world and can live for more than 100 years. #tortoise #sandiego #galapagostortoise #galapagos #endangeredspecies
