Released on this day (26 November) in 1996, Sierra On-Line’s ‘Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh’ is widely acknowledged as the first commercially-released video game to feature a canonically bisexual protagonist— making it a surprising outlier in a decade when queer representation in games was nearly nonexistent. The game’s hero, Curtis Craig, is played by Paul Morgan Stetler. Curtis struggles with his mental health and a dead-end middle management job. The character also must navigate feelings for his gay best friend, Trevor (played by Paul Mitri). At the time of the game’s release, ‘Phantasmagoria’ was not well-received by critics or commercially successful. But now the game has earned a cult following, and Stetler has embraced the impact on the LGBTQ+ community— getting to know many of its dedicated fans through an oral history project he began about the game called ‘Conversations with Curtis’. #Phantasmagoria #videogames #LGBTQIA #bisexual #PhantasmagoriaAPuzzleOfFlesh
