Black-bellied whistling ducks are known for their long legs and whistling call. 3 out of the 4 ducklings were admitted to our von Arx Wildlife hospital because they were found orphaned. The fourth Black-bellied whistling duck was actually a transfer from CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.
When other wildlife rehab centers have a single duckling, the staff will reach out to other rehab centers so that the duckling is not raised alone. This is best practice for multiple reasons. Ducks are a flock species and find safety in numbers. They also are very social and need companionship for their metal well-being. This is very important in wildlife rehab because it promotes healing, reduces stress and encourages natural behavior.
