At the turn of the 20th century, New Orleans’ Storyville district was a place of both vice and vitality. In rooms like this, women surrounded themselves with portraits, mementos, and reminders of identity in a society that often reduced them to stereotypes. Photographer E.J. Bellocq preserved these layered interiors, offering rare insight into the lives behind Storyville’s doors.
This December, the Improvisations Gala will honor Storyville’s history and its role in shaping the sound and spirit of jazz.
