What Was Storyville?
From 1897 to 1917, Storyville was the official red-light district of New Orleans, established by city ordinance. But beyond its notoriety, Storyville became one of the most important incubators of American music.
Musicians like Jelly Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden, and Sidney Bechet performed in the saloons, clubs, and brothels that lined these streets. The constant demand for live entertainment helped jazz evolve from ragtime and blues into a distinct art form that would spread around the world.
Today, you can explore the rich history and evolution of jazz at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, where exhibits, instruments, and stories highlight the many influences—from Storyville to Congo Square—that shaped this extraordinary music.
