Popularly known as the Campanile, UC Berkeley’s Sather Tower was designed in the early 1900s by John Galen Howard as part of a master architectural plan to give University of California a unique look. It was named after philanthropist Jane K. Sather, who provided a sizable gift for the tower, including a set of 12 bells.
At 307 feet tall, the Campanile is the second-tallest freestanding clock and bell tower in the world. The Campanile now has a 61-bell grand carillon that serenades Berkeleyans daily.
While Berkeley Time may have been coined to give students and faculty time to travel between classes, we’d like to think it’s also to allow everyone to listen to the chimes at least once every day.
