In early summer, as temperatures rise just enough to introduce subtle melt patterns, surface meltwater begins to flow and refreeze within the glacier. This process hollows out existing cracks and channels, opening ephemeral blue ice tunnels that only exist during this brief window before shifting ice and renewed melt seal them again.
