Today (30 November) marks the passing of Irish author, poet and playwright Oscar Wilde.
Wilde’s homosexuality became the focus of a highly publicized legal case in 1895. After his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas drew scrutiny, Wilde was convicted under Britain’s laws criminalizing sexual relationships between men and sentenced to two years of hard labor.
His imprisonment damaged his health and career, but his case later became a landmark example of the era’s persecution of queer people and contributed to his lasting legacy as a major LGBTQ+ historical figure.
