Today (30 November) marks the passing of Irish author, poet and playwright Oscar Wilde. Wilde’s homosexuality became the focus of a highly publicized legal case in 1895. After his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas drew scrutiny, Wilde was convicted under Britain’s laws criminalizing sexual relationships between men and sentenced to two years of hard labor.
