Why was Wangechi Mutu’s The Seated II covered up? In 2024, we covered it during the Day Without Art to call attention to those in the art community who have been lost to AIDS. In 1989, in response to the worsening AIDS crisis, Visual AIDS organized the first Day Without Art. Coinciding with the World Health Organization’s World AIDS Day on December 1, a Day Without Art is a call for “mourning and action in response to the AIDS crisis” that seeks to celebrate the lives and achievements of lost colleagues and friends, encourage caring for all people with AIDS, educate diverse publics about HIV infection, and find a cure. TMA observed A Day Without Art on Sunday, November 30 while the museum was open to the public.
