Before the Paris criminal court, during the Roger Lumbala trial, a survivor from Mandima testified that she was imprisoned in 2002 by members of the “Effaceur” militia, alongside several men and women, one of whom was eight months pregnant. The “Effaceurs” tortured the detained men using burning pieces of wood. An “Effaceur” soldier took her out of the prison and raped her twice, while her baby was lying on the ground right beside her. She later gave birth to a child conceived as a result of the rape, but the newborn did not survive. On the stand, more than 20 years later, the survivor described the lasting shame and the physical pain she continues to suffer as a result of the violence.
