Last week in Paris, she testified: in 2002 she was beaten, threatened, and then raped by a member of Roger Lumbala’s “Effacer le Tableau” militia. The rape took place in her field near Epulu, where she had taken refuge, within the sight of her husband and brother-in-law, who were hiding in nearby brush. The assault occurred in the presence of her three young children—one aged five and twins aged two—as well as a group of civilians detained and forced to transport goods pillaged by the militiamen, including some of her family’s possessions. She described the lasting trauma, shame, and anger she has lived with since these events.
