Last week in Paris, she testified: in 2002 she was beaten, threatened, and then raped by a member of Roger Lumbala’s “Effacer le Tableau” militia. The rape took place in her field near Epulu, where she had taken refuge, within the sight of her husband and brother-in-law, who were hiding in nearby brush. The assault occurred in the presence of her three young children—one aged five and twins aged two—as well as a group of civilians detained and forced to transport goods pillaged by the militiamen, including some of her family’s possessions.
