In September 2019, Luxembourg's then Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, made history as he spoke about his identity as a gay man at the United Nations. He said: “Being gay was not my choice, but not accepting it is a choice, and to accept myself was so difficult. I don't ask people to judge, but to accept. Homophobia is a personal choice and we have to fight against it!” Bettel was the youngest ever Prime Minister, taking office at the age of 40. He was also the first serving EU leader - and second leader in the world - to marry a same-sex partner. He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in 2023 in the country’s current Frieden-Bettel Government. #FromTheArchive #XavierBettel #Luxembourg #gay #lgbtqhistory #representation
