Tonight was an emotional night for us. We received the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund Lifetime Achievement Award in Cannes, France. This recognition is special because of who Nelson Mandela is and everything he embodied. We thought back to when we met President Mandela in South Africa where we hosted basketball clinics for kids in five cities. He was soft spoken man with a big heart, superior intelligence and he wanted to do so much for humanity. President Mandela wanted to make sure he not only left a mark in South Africa but improved the lives of kids globally providing access to education, healthcare and lifting them out of poverty. His mission was like ours, to try and improve the lives of those in the inner cities of America. While on the stage, the thought that two kids who grew up poor in Michigan were on the stage in Cannes, France receiving such a prestigious award came to mind.
