Norway and the Cook Islands just said no to deep-sea mining⦠for now!
These victories were only possible because more than 4 million people, 800+ scientists, countless ocean defenders, and the unwavering leadership of Indigenous communities in the Cook Islands rose together for the deep.
In November,
@greenpeacenz joined Cook Islander activists to send the industry a strong message they couldnāt ignore: Donāt Mine the Moana. And it worked. After the action, the Cook Islands government has delayed the decision on whether seabed mining can happen until at least 2032.
Meanwhile, a wave of bold Greenpeace activist activities across Europe during the Norwegian parliamentās budget negotiations also made it clear that there is no place for deep-sea mining.
Parliament decided there will be no deep-sea mining in Norway for at least four more years! The Norwegian industry itself has claimed that this will be the nail in the coffin for deep-sea mining in the Arctic ...
