A poet from Youngsville, North Carolina, Tyree Daye graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from NC State in 2014 and returned to earn his MFA in 2017. He is the author of two poetry collections, a Cave Canem Foundation fellow and a teaching assistant professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. In 2019, he was among 10 recipients of the Whiting Award, one of the most prestigious national prizes given to emerging writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama. Daye’s second collection, Cardinal, appeared on The New York Times’ Best Poetry of 2020 list. His work has also appeared in Prairie Schooner, Nashville Review, Callaloo, Kenyon Review Online and The New Yorker, which last month published his poem “what the angels eat,” complete with an audio recording by the author.
