Happy release to these pelicans! These three brown pelicans were released after recovering from their injuries including one who arrived with a pouch tear caused by fishing line. Because pelicans rely on their pouch to catch and hold fish, even a small hole can be life-threatening because they are unable to eat or fish properly. They may also get caught on trees or other items. Fishing-line injuries are common in coastal wildlife, but they’re preventable. Properly disposing of fishing gear keeps birds like these safe, social, and thriving. With proper treatment, nutrition, and time to regain strength, these pelicans made a full recovery and were able to be released back into their natural habitat. Releases like this are an important reminder that clean shorelines keep wildlife safe!
