In celebration of #InternationalVolunteerDay, we spoke with Fabian Ruf about his impact. As a 2025 Optica Ambassador and the 2023 Pivoting Fellow, Fabian has helped establish student associations in Monrovia, Liberia and Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, and has provided on-site support for outreach programs in Ghana. We asked, he answered. As an Ambassador, what impact do you hope your work will make on the optics community? "Despite Optica's great programs, sometimes just obtaining a visa can be an insurmountable hurdle—something many people may not be aware of. I hope to inspire students and early-career professionals to pursue careers in industry or academia and follow their passion, regardless of their background."
