There’s a lot of confusion online about what an IUL actually is — so let’s clear this up. I like IULs, and they can be a powerful tool when used correctly, but an Indexed Universal Life policy is not a personal “private pension plan.” A government pension is a defined benefit plan — the government funds your retirement. An IUL is nothing like that. It’s simply a defined contribution vehicle where you are funding the plan, just like any other personal financial tool. And unless we’re counting Social Security (which we are all forced to pay into anyway), you’re never in a position to “fund” a government-style pension for yourself. So instead of tearing down one product to make another look good, the best thing you can do is: Learn how the IUL actually works, understand the pros and cons, and then decide if it fits your financial goals.
