During the Roger Lumbala trial, a woman testified before the criminal court that in late 2002 she was repeatedly raped by five members of the “Effaceur” militia in her village of Mandima, losing consciousness during the assault. Afterward, she was detained and forced to leave behind her baby, who was just over one and a half years old and whom she was still breastfeeding. She was only able to recover her child after paying 12 dollars. At the time, the “Effaceurs,” who had come from Mambasa, had taken control of the village. She later developed gonorrhea as a result of the rape. On the stand, the victim spoke of the lasting shame associated with the events and the difficulty of recounting them more than twenty years later.
