Glory was born and raised in #Nigeria, and as a young child learned he had sickle cell disease, a painful inherited blood disorder. Growing up, he experienced frequent crises (extremely painful #sicklecell episodes), which worsened in adulthood, sometimes keeping him in the hospital for weeks at a time. Glory lived in the U.S. for several years as a child and returned to attend college at calvinuniversity. As his disease worsened, Glory met with his hematologist and learned about clinical trials at the #UCSF Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, the largest and most complete program for people with the disease in the western U.S. In 2023, he started exchange transfusions at our #Oakland hospital with Dr. Mark Walters. The transfusions replace affected red blood cells with normal ones, and they helped reduce Glory's crises.
