Please wish Anouk a happy first birthday! Anouk developed an infection as a newborn, and our doctors diagnosed her with #neutropenia, a condition in which abnormally low white blood cell counts make it difficult to fight infections. Anouk’s mother, Elze, is an immunologist at #UCSF and recalls worrying that her daughter wouldn’t survive. The baby went through multiple surgical procedures and rounds of antibiotics during her stays at our #Oakland and #SanFrancisco hospitals. Thankfully, she made a full recovery and celebrated her first birthday last month. The University of California Marching Band (calband) paraded down Anouk’s street in #Berkeley to help her celebrate the big day, as neighbors gathered outside to wave and cheer! Even Anouk’s surgeon, Dr. Chau Tai, joined the festivities!
