This is one of the largest collections of Amedeo Modigliani’s art anywhere in the world. And it’s right here in DC. Most of these works are on view because of two people: Chester and Maud Dale. Long before Modigliani became a recognized name, Chester and Maud believed in him. They collected his paintings and sculptures at a time when critics dismissed them. Maud Dale was an especially tireless advocate for Modigliani’s work. In the early 1900s, she organized shows and even published a book about his art, simply because she wanted the world to see his talent.
