Rev. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, pastor of the 13,000-member Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas and a proud brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., is stepping from the pulpit into the political arena. This week, Haynes officially launched his campaign for Texas’ 30th Congressional District, the seat currently held by his member and mentee, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, as she begins her run for the Senate. If you know Haynes, you know this move didn’t come out of nowhere. The announcement dropped right after a sermon where he didn’t hold back; he called out the Supreme Court’s rulings on redistricting, challenged the rise of authoritarian politics, and pushed his congregation to wake up to what he called “the law being on the side of injustice.” Crockett sat in the pews as he prayed over her, asking God to cover her as she steps into a new fight.
