Day 2 of Science Mischief!
Follow along for 12 days of science mischief from Dr. Ralph the Science Elf 🤓
✍🏻📝HOW TO (from Dr. Ralph!)
Mix 1 cup water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda
Add 1/2 to 3/4 tablespoons of popcorn
Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to a cup for your “melted snow” (have some EXTRA melted snow on the side just in case the popcorn don’t “dance” immediately)
⚠️ make sure there is room at the top of your glass so it doesn’t bubble over
🎄🧪 the science:
Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When combined, they kick-start an acid-base chemical reaction that creates carbon dioxide bubbles.
🫧Those bubbles attach to the popcorn making them more buoyant in water.
⏫They rise to the surface and bubble (the CO2) is released into the air.
👇🏼Suddenly the popcorn is denser than water again and it sinks.
🔁This reaction happens over and over, causing the popcorn to dance! 🕺💃🏻
