Getting trapped in quicksand may seem like a myth drawn out in old movies and TV shows, but it really did happen to one unfortunate hiker in Utah’s Arches National Park. An experienced hiker was traversing a small canyon on the second day of a 20-mile backpacking trip when they sank up to their thighs.
Fortunately, the hiker was rescued by a team who used shovels, ladders and other tools. And for those of you scared of quicksand, don’t worry. The human body is buoyant, so it can’t be fully submerged in the seemingly never-ending pit, according to John Marshall, who was part of the rescue team.
