When summer temperatures soar, your body can go from hot to overheated in minutes, especially during outdoor activities.
Heat stroke is the most dangerous heat-related illness. It’s more than just overheating—it's when your body temperature rises to a life-threatening level and your cooling system shuts down. Quick action is critical.
Warning signs to watch out for are:
- Hot, dry skin — with little or no sweating
- Confusion, dizziness or slurred speech
- A rapid, strong pulse
- Vomiting, seizures or passing out
If you see any of these signs:
- Call 911 right away.
- Move the person to a cooler place — in the shade or indoors.
- Remove excess clothing.
- Start cooling the person with cold, wet cloths, ice packs on the neck and underarms, or even a cold bath if you can.
Heat stroke can cause permanent damage—or worse—if not treated quickly. Know the warning signs and stay alert to protect yourself and those you care about.
