they say we’re supposed to find joy in the little things, and so i did.
i found joy in the orange slices at halftime
in getting to call my dad coach
in post-game meals at caffery’s
in the hours of driving to jeff cup and beyond
in 5000 touches a day
in the pda surf groupme
in getting to lift a state sectional trophy with my sister and forever favorite teammate
in the countless sunrises and sunsets admired from the field
in coin tosses
in post-game debriefs with dad and “that’s my baby girl” from mom
in post-game tailgates
in deep breaths
in “right foot in”
in the number 8
in kicking a ball around a big rectangle for 90 minutes with my forever best friends
i may not be a soccer player anymore, but i will always be the girl who found joy in the little things that soccer taught her to appreciate.
