I’m siding with the caller on this one — and here’s why. Most people start investing in their 401(k), and it’s also where they invest the longest. That’s exactly why so many Americans end up with millions inside their 401(k) over time. The long-term consistency works. But here’s the part most people never look at… fees. Many managed 401(k) funds charge 1.5% to 2%, and over decades, that eats a massive portion of your returns. If that same person invested through their own brokerage account in a low-cost index fund at 0.03%, they could end up with hundreds of thousands more — simply because less money is being lost to fees. The investment isn’t the problem… It’s what you’re being charged to hold it. If you want help choosing a solid brokerage account so you can keep more of your money working for you, comment broker and I’ll send you the one I personally use.
