Marquese Donshae Gunter, 19, pled guilty to second-degree assault and received probation with anger management, according to Attorney Andy Hamlin.
Gunter shot his unarmed stepfather, Travis Smith, earlier this year in Lamar County. Smith survived the shooting.
Gunter has been held on $750,000 bond since his arrest.
Hamlin said Gunter admitted in court Friday to shooting Smith, who was unarmed on a couch.
Gunter, Smith and Gunter’s mother shared an apartment. Gunter fled but later returned with a stolen gun.
Speculation that Gunter acted in self-defense during a domestic dispute was later disproven by evidence.
At a bond hearing earlier this week, according to publish reports, the victim asked that the charges against his stepson be dropped.
