A national housing program funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, is losing $5.9M in funding. Participants of the program are at risk of returning to homelessness. The Continuum of Care program provides emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing and wrap-around services to help people with severe disabilities and mental illnesses who cannot otherwise afford housing on their own. The program is the largest source of federal funding for homelessness assistance, with an annual budget of about $3.5B, serving over 750,000 people experiencing homelessness each year, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. There are more than 400 Continuum of Care programs across the nation, including nine programs that serve Alabama.
