Students and staff at St. Bernard Preparatory School are mourning the loss of one of the school’s brightest students, Sarah Cumbie. Cumbie fell critically ill on Nov. 16 after being found unresponsive at home. She was transported to Cullman Regional Medical Center and later transferred to intensive care at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. The 17-year-old died on Nov. 21 after being on life support since the onset of the sudden illness five days earlier. Tests are being done to determine the cause of death. Craig Mann, a teacher at the school, and his wife adopted Sarah after Sarah's mother died in a car accident shortly after her father died of COVID when Sarah first came to St. Bernard as a seventh grader. “Academically gifted, Sarah learned just this month that her ACT ‘super score’ had reached an impressive 32, positioning her for four years of tuition-free study at the University of Alabama — her dream school," St. Bernard Preparatory School said in a statement. “Beyond the ...
