Since 2019, Amal has led Maria’s international legal team. The visit included a meeting with President Marcos Jr. at Malacañang Palace, where Amal discussed concrete steps the government can take to protect journalists and expressed support for decriminalizing libel. “We hope that the outcome of her cases will send a message that the Philippines is a place where journalists will never be prosecuted for doing their job,” Amal said at this year’s #SocialGoodSummit.
