On Nov. 12, UCPD officers arrested a UC Berkeley Ph.D. candidate on three counts of felony vandalism after a campus professor installed a surveillance device that allegedly recorded the suspect destroying three computers in a Cory Hall cubicle and lab where the suspect also worked.
The suspect, electrical engineering and computer sciences Ph.D. candidate Jiarui Zou, was reported to UCPD by a campus professor after footage showed Zou tampering with two university and one personal computer with a screwdriver and a USB device.
According to a UCPD statement, the total damage equated to at least $2,119. However, the EECS professor and the other victim believe Zou is additionally responsible for up to $46,855 in computer damage over the past three years, according to UCPD.
