Day 6 of Science Mischief!
Follow along for 12 days of science mischief with Dr. Ralph Science Elf.
📝HOW TO 🧪
Fill a glass with water.
Take out the inside of a yellow highlighter and squeeze the liquid in.
Fill up the glass the rest of the way with oil (doesn’t matter which kind)
SNOW: you can either use salt or crush up alka seltzer for a more bubbly effect.
☝🏼TIP: if you use alka seltzer make sure there are some bigger chunks in there so they sink easily
❄️Bring to a dark place, Turk on a black light, and sprinkle the snow in!
🧪 THE SCIENCE 🤓
Yellow highlighter contains fluorescent chemicals. When you shine ultraviolet light (which has more energy than a regular flashlight) it EXCITES those fluorescent chemicals and they RELEASE that energy as GLOWING light!
❄️The SNOW:
🧂If you used SALT - it sank bc it is more DENSE than water, dragging down some oil with it. But once it dissolved in the water the oil rose back up to the top!
