Kerri Bedrick wandered into the Middle Island fire department in January 2023 showing signs of hallucinations, paranoia and rage. Emergency personnel took the 30-year-old single mother to the hospital and sent her then-7-year-old son to live with her mother while she underwent treatment. Suffolk County Child Protective Service workers investigated at least seven complaints about her care of the boy. Every time, the case workers closed each case and took no action. Then police said Bedrick was involved in a wrong-way crash that killed her son. He was 9.
