It’s hammer time!
Our cofounder paulnicklen spent some time with these guys in Bimini, Bahamas a few years ago. Don’t be intimidated by those teeth, they’re not aggressive toward humans, and there has never been a documented fatal attack.
Did you know their skulls are hammer-shaped too? (Look it up!) Plus, there’s an actual evolutionary use for that head: wider head = more electroreceptors to sense their environment, and it’s a perfect tool for pinning down prey.
Their head shape isn’t the only strange thing about them. One species, the bonnethead, is the only omnivorous shark and eats seagrass along with the usual squid and crustaceans. They can also swim sideways, scientists believe it’s actually more energy-efficient for them.
Their biggest threat is the shark fin trade. A recent investigation revealed a massive illegal market in Asia with 10 times more hammerhead meat than reported, pushing endangered hammerheads even closer to the brink.
