Nanjing observed a one-minute standstill as air-raid sirens sounded across the city, in remembrance of the victims of the massacre 80 years ago. On December 13, 1937, Japanese aggressors seized the city—then the capital of the Nationalist government—and carried out a horrific massacre of Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers. It was known as the Nanjing Massacre. The atrocity lasted for more than six weeks. Widespread killings, looting, and rape took place daily across the city, leaving at least 300,000 Chinese people dead. It stands as one of the darkest chapters of World War II history.
