Chip-scale magnetometer uses light for high-precision magnetic sensing.
The new precision magnetometer, based on a magneto-optic material that alters its properties in response to a magnetic field, has the potential to enable lightweight and low-power sensing for applications in space, navigation, and medicine.
Additionally, to make it more practical, the researchers designed the magnetometer using silicon photonics, a technology that fabricates tiny optical devices from the same silicon found in microchips.
