Behind the scenes at SFMOMA, Conservator Jennifer Hickey is re-adhering cracked, lifted paint on Clyfford Still’s “PH-585 (1952-A)”. Using a custom-built bridge to float over the 10-foot-tall painting, she stabilizes fragile paint layers that Still applied himself over 70 years ago.
As Jen says, paintings aren’t static. They’re constantly reacting to their environment, which is why her conservation work is crucial to allow visitors to see Still’s work for years to come.
