On the tiny, uninhabited islet of Prickly Pear East, a cross-Caribbean love story is helping save one of the worldβs rarest lizards β the Lesser Antillean Iguana.
This species was teetering on the edge of extinction until conservationists stepped in to save the last 23 individuals on the main island of Anguilla, moving them to the relatively safe islet of Prickly Pear East in 2016 to help save the species. But with so few individuals, axatrust, faunafloraint, and rewild also teamed up with forestrydominica to give the iguanas even more help β and a few new potential mates.
π¦ In 2021, an additional 10 young iguanas--this time from Dominica--boarded a plane bound for Anguilla β a real-life reptile romance mission. And it worked! π Today, more than 300 Lesser Antillean Iguanas now call Prickly Pear East home.
