The Wright Stuff… On a chilly, windy morning in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, two bicycle mechanics from Ohio, Orville and Wilbur Wright, changed the world forever. Orville climbed aboard their homemade flying machine, the Wright Flyer. At 10:35 a.m., with Wilbur running alongside, it lifted off for 12 seconds and 120 feet! By the fourth flight, Wilbur defied gravity for 852 feet in 59 seconds. And just like that, the first sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air flight in history.
