The suspect in last weekend’s mass shooting at Brown University has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and investigators are confident he was also responsible for the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor two days later, authorities said on Thursday.
Officials identified the gunman as Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national. He was found dead on Thursday night inside a storage rental facility in Salem, New Hampshire, where he had leased a unit last month.
Valente had studied at Brown University more than 20 years ago as a Ph.D. physics student and was a former classmate in Portugal of the MIT professor who was killed, Nuno Loureiro, 47. Authorities said that despite these connections, the motive for the attacks remains unclear.
