Two clomping cowboy boots, one red “Make America Great Again” hat and an extra-large American flag are three essentials Eli Mehrling carries with him during political discussions.
On Monday mornings, Mehrling, along with other members of San Francisco State University’s chapter of the national conservative organization, Turning Point USA, can be found in front of the Cesar Chavez Student Center with patriotic buttons, flyers and miniature flags, standing in anticipation for someone to approach.
The goal isn’t to enrage, he said, but engage.
