A retro roadside gem: this Columbus landmark has seen it all ➡️ The Homestead Motel opened in 1952 in Whitehall, boasting luxurious rooms, air conditioning, and stylish furniture in a neighborhood full of dining and entertainment. The timing was perfect. It sat along U.S. Route 40, the historic “National Road”, which connected Maryland to Ohio to Illinois. As car culture surged into the 1950s, the motel opened its doors. All but five of Columbus’ motels were located on this street, and business was booming. Luck would not last forever. Just four years later, the government authorized $25 billion for new interstates, diverting traffic away from the National Road by the end of the decade. While it’s no longer the major artery, the road is still a major thoroughfare, and the Homestead Motel still operates today.
